Crisper than Crisp Cookies

Sat Aug 22, 2009, 11:14 PM
I wouldn't call myself an amazing cook. But I wouldn't call myself a bad one either. If I had to choose I'd say I'm average.

I enjoying baking, making cakes, cookies, muffins, bread, scones, any and all.
I don't lack experience in cooking but I'm not extremely experienced either.
Once again average.
I don't create my own recipes but I'm pretty good at following them.

... or so I thought..

Today was interesting. Before today the worst thing I have ever done to the poor food was over-cook it a little. I've had "failures" before.. but they were still edible.

Often while cooking simple things like cookies I talk on the phone.
And if I'm not the phone then I can guarantee I'm listening to music.
Actually either way I'm listening to music.. but that's not the point.

The point is that there is always something there to distract me. However, I usually never get too distracted and make a big mistake. (I can't say I'm never distracted cause how is that possible!)

So today I was really sleepy and didn't feel like cooking, but Chocolate Chip Cookies were needed for the pot-luck tomorrow (along with other foods)
Yard work, or cooking. That's the choices I had. The answer was easy.
I began to make Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Everything started off fine. Mixed the butter and sugar in one bowl, flour and baking soda in another (simplified).
I'm always very meticulous about measuring and not forgetting any ingredients.
I was this time too.... right?

At this point in time my mom called from outside for my help.
I left everything where it was and...
--------------------------------------------- climbed a tree.. XD

There was a dead branch stuck up in the tree and we were stick and tired of having to stare at it when we ate dinner. Since it was directly outside of the window in my dinning room. So I climbed the tree and tried to poke it down with a rake. This didn't work out to well. I couldn't get any closer because the branches were to thin near where the dead branch was and I didn't want to fall through.
*sigh*

"Ding Dong"
Someones at the door. A friend dropped by to pick something up he left over here a month ago...
He helped me get the dead branch down!! Yay!! When it was down it was such a happy moment~ it's not like it came down right away but since he is taller than both me and my mom it didn't take too long. So we went in and had drink and talked for awhile.
Cookies mostly forgotten.

After short awhile I resumed making the cookies and continued talking to my friend.
While scooping them onto the baking sheet I noted that they were oddly soft but dismissed it assuming that the butter must have melted a bit by sitting on the counter while I was doing other things...

Put them in the oven, turn on the timer.. and moved on.
---
~time passes~
---
*beep, beep, beep*
Cookies are done! I skip over to the oven in delight, only to find the batter (now cooked and hard) ALL OVER the pan and and bottom of the oven... -WHAT?!?

I hadn't used a baking sheet with edges since usually cookies don't run off the baking sheet and try to make a huge mess...

I couldn't figure out what went wrong. I knew for a fact I hadn't missed adding a single ingredient to their bowls...
- that's it.. to their bowls..

I looked over to the far side of the room, to find the flour, baking soda and salt bowl still sitting there... full

I forgot to ADD FLOUR... to add the whole bowl
This means that what I put in the oven was simple butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, and chocolate chips...

At this point I was on the ground laughing and repeating "I forgot to add flour".. over and over again.

After a while, when I could breathe once again.
My lovable mother put the oven on clean (which means it will clean itself by making the oven very hot).. this actually wasn't a very good idea.

Simply because we had removed as much of the gunk that was on the bottom as possible... actually we hadn't removed any at all..

Soo...

when I looked over at the oven... the inside of it was on fire... three big fires to be exact..
-So I ran outside panicked yelling "MOM! the oven's on fire! The OVEN'S ON FIRE"...
It smelled so bad.. ewww.. smoke
Luckly the fire alarm didn't go off.. (I think it's out of batteries.. {oops} >.< )
It filled up the whole house, so we had every fan running and windows open, front door included.
Took a while to air out and properly clean.. which I had to do.. :(

The three fires left behind three odd shaped pieces of ash that looked just like cookies. Round and flat. So they became my crispy cookies. Of course I didn't dare eat them.. they smelt bad enough.
I wanted to show you, so if I can I'll add a link to a picture of it.. but to do that I have to find my camera cord.. I'm sure it's somewhere :)

Anyway, so today was my first complete and utter total failure at baking.
and hopefully I'll learn from my mistake and next time put the flour bowl somewhere I'll see it so that I don't totally forget about its existence and make a mess.

If you actually read this, thanks for taking the time and listening to my boring story <3
